Summer Sanitarium Tour, July 2003

Brett, Timmy and I went to see the Summer Sanitarium Tour on July 6 in Foxboro. Besided seeing our favorite band, Metallica, Tim and I were also looking forward to seeing Gillette Stadium for the first time. I was a little afraid of bringing my digital camera to the concert, so Timmy and I bought disposible cameras instead. The concert was great, but the beers were expensive ($6.50 a pop).

We rolled into the parking lot at Gillette Stadium a little before 3pm. Parking cost us $30 on top of the $75 we each spent on tickets. Just the beginning to a very expensive day.

Mudvayne hit the stage as we entered the stadium. Before heading to our seats, we decided to grab a beer and walk around first. Here is a picture from behind the stage, looking out at the stadium entrance.

Here is a picture from the second deck food court. Timmy graciously bought me a soda (which was completely flat) and we headed for the top row of the upper deck.

Here is another picture of the Mudvayne stage from the last row of seats in the upper deck. The lead singer starts sucking up to the crowd here, starting a "Yankees Suck" chant.

Don't look down! This picture doesn't really do justice to the steep incline here. There was a little shade and a nice breeze, though.

Here is a shot of the entrance and a little New England rock garden. At this point there are probably more people in the parking lot tail-gating than people in the stadium.

One last shot before we begin the treacherous climb back down to find our seats in the second deck. Deftones were up next, and we needed to get some more beers. The lighthouse is a pretty cool feature. And check out all those cars in the parking lot.

I did take a few pictures of the Deftones stage, but they didn't come out. At this point I miss my digital camera. Here is a shot of the Linkin Park stage, though, with some funky rock structures. The place starts to pack in at this point. They put on a really good show.

Here is a shot of the Limp Bizkit stage. I was really looking forward to seeing them, and they did not dissapount. Tim did not want to see them at all, and by the end of their set, he was a Limp Bizkit convert. Fred Durst played along with some fans giving him crap about wearing a Yankees cap. He said he'd wear a Red Sox hat if he had one, so someone threw one up on stage and he wore it for the rest of the set. Pretty cool.

Half-way through the set, Fred makes his way into the crowd and heads to the back of the stadium. He jumps up on some kind of shed or something and does to or three songs from there. I had a few pictures of this as well, but they didn't come out either. Still, it was pretty cool.

The second to last song in the set was a new tune called "Fire" or something like that. I think it is off their new album. They used some cool pyro effects here.

Metallica toke the stage after dark, and put on the best show of the night. They open here with "Battery", one of my favorite tunes. The pictures didn't come out to well at night, but you can just make out four large screens on stage, each one featuring a different band member. I thought this was cool.

I can't remember what song this was, it may have been one of the two songs they played off the new album, "St. Anger". But here are some fireworks launching off from the top of the stage.

Finally, here is some pyro set off during their encore performance of "Enter Sandman". Just before this was the best song of the night, "One". I had some good pictures of this as well, but (a reoccurring story) they didn't come out.

Overall this was a great show. A little expensive, and the heat was brutal, but each band got better than the one that came before them. The highlight of the afternoon had to be the idiots who kept jumping from the stands into the general admission on the field. It was an absolute riot watching some of them get their clocks cleaned by security personnel. It was also fun watching others elude security with the skill of NFL running backs. This is the fourth time I've been to see Metallica, and they always put on a good show.
