Remodelling the Nursery, May 2008

After wrapping up the office remodel, it was finally time to tackle the nursery. As it turns out, it was probably a good idea to do the office first. With that experience behind me, I think that the nursery came out much better.

A quick before shot of the room. The walls were a light lavender color. It should be noted that we actually liked the existing color of the room, and the carpet was in much better shape than the office was. We came close to calling the whole thing off and leaving the room as is, but finally decided if we didn't do it now, it might be years before we come back to it.

Of course we started by removing the popcorn ceiling. With my Dad's help, we made quick work of it. In fact, in one day, we had the popcorn down, sanded and patched all the walls with the first coat, and removed the carpet. Not bad at all.

Here is the best picture we could get of the before and after wall color. To the right is the old lavender color. On the left is the new "Lilac Bisque" color. Basically, they are both purple, but the new color has a little more calming blue to it.

The week before my Dad was supposed to come back up to help with the laminate floor, he hurt his eye handling brush and had to stay home. Luckily, my brother Brett was available to keep the project on track.

We made a couple of adjustments to the installation process based on how the office floor went in. The end result was we were able to get the nursery floor in quicker, and used one less package of flooring.

The following weekend, my Dad's eye had healed up, and the new windows he ordered for the office and nursery arrived, so we worked on installing them.

The old windows were original to the house (1971) and were pretty drafty. These new ones will help keep the rooms much warmer in the winter.

Plus, they look pretty sharp, too. Here is a picture of the finished window from the inside.

Phew. Thanks to Grandpa (and Uncle Brett), we were able to get the nursery room done before Ella's arrival. Now we just have to figure out how to fit all her stuff in there.
